Trojans fall 11-6 in Sun Belt Baseball Tourney

SAN MARCOS, Texas  (  – The Troy baseball team fell to the host Texas State, 11-6, in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday at Bobcat Ballpark.

Troy (32-25) battled back after falling behind 2-0 due to a Tanner Hill home run in the first inning and tied the game at two in the second inning. Joey Denison and Trevor Davis scored on identical plays, as both scored on consecutive ground outs to second base.

Justin Friend and Trevor Davis hit solo shots in the fourth inning and gave Troy a 4-2 lead. Only a batter separated Friend and Davis from hitting back-to-back home runs.

Texas State (31-26) scored in the final four innings, but cut the lead in half in the sixth and then tied the game at four in the seventh inning. Cory Geisler singled through the left side in the eighth and plated one that gave the Bobcats a 5-4 lead. Two more scored in the on a Derek Scheible single to left field, which left the Bobcats in control 7-4 through eight innings.

The Bobcats added to their lead with an RBI triple, a run scoring single and a two-run home run in the ninth inning giving them an 11-4 lead.

The Trojans wouldn’t go down without a fight in the ninth inning as Chase Smartt drove in two with a double to left center field. However, a strikeout ended the game and finished the comeback for Troy.

Corey Childress (2-4) suffered the loss. He pitched 2.1 innings and allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits and struck out one. Starter Grant Bennett went 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits and struck out two.

Davis had a 2-for-4 performance with a double and a home run, including two runs scored. Smartt had the lone multi-RBI game as he plated two in a 1-for-3 day. Friend, Denison, TJ Binder and Brandon Lockridge each had a hit and scored a run in the game.

The Trojans will play the loser of No. 8 Arkansas State and No. 1 UL Lafayette in an elimination game at 12:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on ESPN3.
