Drivers hit the road for 4th of July weekend

More than 40 million people are expected to hit the highways and skyways this weekend for the 4th of July.

Many drivers we spoke with say they have felt the stress of all of this traffic.  The main thing on their minds is to get to their destinations safely.

With the traffic slowing many people down, drivers have kept a close eye on the price at the pump this weekend. says the Montgomery and Alabama gas price averages are sitting at $2.05.  That’s over 20 cents less than the national average of $2.27.

Houston Smith is traveling from Kentucky to Panama City Beach and says traffic has definitely slowed down his trip.

“Horrible,” he said, “below Birmingham, 16 to 18 mph for probably 30 minutes and then it speeded up a little bit.”

Another driver, Sara McLeod is traveling back home to Mobile and says she was surprised the holiday traffic was so bad today.

“But we didn’t think about it being fourth of July weekend,” she explained, “driving up on a Friday, we were thinking more of Saturday, Sunday, Monday.”

Both drivers stressed the importance of getting to your destination safely, regardless of how long it takes.
