Heat Here to Stay

BACK TO WORK: For today, we are forecasting more sun than clouds, with only isolated storms. It will be hot and humid, as highs should be in the mid 90s.

The main weather headline across the country for the upcoming week will be the very hot temperatures thanks to the strengthening upper-level ridge to our west. Alabama remains on the eastern periphery of the ridge through the latter part of the week ahead. Since Alabama will be on the eastern periphery of the high, the hottest temperatures still look to be staying to the west of the state. However, being on the east side of the ridge, we are going to see northwest flow across the state and that could allow storms to move south from the Midwest into the Southeast.

REST OF THE WEEK: Hot and humid weather is the forecast. The only heat relief will come from the daily threat of afternoon and evening storms. With the ridge controlling our weather and the warm air aloft, the thunderstorm activity will be more isolated in nature. Look for highs this week in the mid to upper 90s and some triple digit heat will be possible for portions of the state. Add in those dew points in the 70s, and we could certainly see heat index values approach the 105° range which is the advisory criteria for Alabama. Once again, embedded within the northwest flow, we could very well see a complex of storms move in from the northwest and provide some heat relief, but this is no guarantee.

WEEKEND SNEAK PEEK: It still looks as though the ridge will remain the dominant player in our weather, but a little weaker, which could yield slightly better rain chances. The forecast at this time, highs in the mid 90s, lows in the mid 70s, and those afternoon and evening storms.
