Trojan football adds UNC transfer Junior Gnonkonde
TROY, Ala. (troytrojans.com) – The Troy football team reported to campus Monday for the start of fall camp, and one of the new additions to the Trojan roster is North Carolina transfer Junior Gnonkonde, who recorded 7.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks last season for the Tar Heels.
Gnonkonde graduated from North Carolina in May and will be immediately eligible to play this season for the Trojans. All told, Gnonkonde played in 37 games for the Tar Heels and finished with 97 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 12.0 tackles for loss, 11 quarterback hurries, five pass break ups, two forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries.
Troy defensive coordinator Vic Koenning served as the defensive coordinator during Gnonkonde’s first three seasons at North Carolina.
“He is a great young man, which really showed by getting his degree in four years at North Carolina,” Koenning said. “His teammates really liked him and he does everything you ask him to do. He is a freak of nature physically, but the best part of Junior is the type of young man he is.”
Gnonkonde earned ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors last season after recording nine tackles, 2.0 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss in North Carolina’s victory over Wake Forest.
“If he doesn’t come in here and play like an all-conference player and put himself in position for that type of recognition after the season, then I will be disappointed,” Koenning said. “I’ve set a pretty high bar for him, but that is why he is coming here. He is coming here because he trusts me, and he believes getting back in this system gives him a great opportunity to move on to the next level.”
Troy opens fall camp Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. with the season opener set for Sept. 3 against Austin Peay.
Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by contacting the Troy Ticket Office online at TroyTrojans.com, by phone at 877-878-WINS or in person at the Tine Davis Fieldhouse.
