Lewis sets new Troy shoutout mark in 1-0 win over Jacksonville State

TROY, Ala.  (troytrojans.com) – Goalkeeper Mikki Lewis set a new Troy record with her 23rd career shutout and freshman Qarli Stone scored her first career goal as the Trojans knocked off Jacksonville State, 1-0, at the Troy Soccer Complex on Sunday.

Lewis, a St. Johns, Fla., native, posted three saves on Sunday. She passed Ashley Burnham, who registered 22 shutouts from 2008-11. Lewis is a two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection and holds Troy single-season records in wins (16, 2014), goals-against average (0.62, 2015) and shutouts (11, 2014). The junior is 16 shutouts from tying the Sun Belt Conference career record.

Stone landed her first career goal in the 72nd minute after Troy controlled possession and created a multitude of scoring opportunities throughout the game. Center back Alex Huynh played the ball long where it was headed by a Jacksonville State defender directly into the path of Kate Lorenz streaking into the box. Lorenz played the ball to Stone, who was anchored on the penalty spot. Stone took a touch before planting the ball into the net.

STAT OF THE GAME

Jacksonville State (1-3) took five shots in the first have, two on frame. However, the Trojans were locked in defensively in the final 45 minutes and allowed the Gamecocks just one shot.

STAT OF THE GAME (Part II)

Kiersten Edlund played an important role in Troy’s attack. The outside back was able to push forward and cross several balls into the box leading to scoring chances. While the Trojans found the net just once, the team took nine corners in the match.

QUOTABLE (Jason Hamilton)

Sunday games are always difficult, we knew that coming in,” head coach Jason Hamilton said.

“The way Jacksonville State plays, they are very physical and they are going to battle. I think our players that came in off the bench did a fantastic job for us. On the goal, there were three players involved that just subbed in. To have have three freshmen come in and be impactful in the game is a sign of what we have for the future.”

QUOTABLE (Mikki Lewis on setting career shutout record)

“It feels great. I never thought about [records]; I came to Troy and thought one day that I might make it onto the field and that’s what I’ve been concentrating on,” goalkeeper Mikki Lewis said.

“We’re are one of the best teams in the conference for overall defensive attitude. We have practice where we do nothing but step in front of balls. You don’t see that too much and our team is completely dedicated to it.
