Biscuits blank BayBears again, stay in first place

MOBILE, Ala. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – The Biscuits won for the ninth time in ten games on Tuesday night, shutting out the Mobile BayBears 3-0 to capture the series and remain in first place in the Second Half North Division at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Chih-Wei Hu (7-8), who learned earlier in the day that he had been named the Southern League’s best right-handed pitcher, delivered a performance for the ages tossing eight shutout innings, allowing just five hits with no walks and two strikeouts on the way to the Taiwanese righty’s seventh victory of the season.

Hu got all the offensive support he would need from Granden Goetzman in the second inning, as the Biscuits left-fielder knocked in Patrick Leonard from second on an RBI-single to hand the Biscuits an early 1-0 lead. Three innings later, after Kean Wong doubled to lead off the fifth, Jake Bauers punched a Terry Doyle (0-1) pitch into the right-field gap for an RBI-double of his own that made it 2-0.

Leonard would swat another RBI-double in the seventh to tack on some insurance, and Jaye Chapman put the BayBears away in the bottom of the ninth for his 18th save of the season. The Biscuits are still in first place by half-a-game with six left to play, and will turn to Brent Honeywell (3-1) in the series finale against John Omahen (7-5) on Wednesday at 6:35 PM.
