Controversy about Pledge of Allegiance in Alex City Schools

There is some confusion and controversy concerning the Pledge of Allegiance being recited in Alexander City Schools.

Mayor Charles Shaw signed a proclamation Tuesday to make sure the Pledge of Allegiance is recited everyday at school.

“I was surprised at finding out just last week that we don’t do that on a daily basis,” he explained, “each and every day the students are not offered that opportunity.”

Mayor Shaw says he has gotten calls from parents complaining that the pledge isn’t recited.

The Alexander City Schools Superintendent, however, says that’s just not the case.

“I’ve never worked in a school ever where we didn’t say the pledge of allegiance every morning and have a moment of silence,” he shared, “and for anyone to say that we don’t do the pledge of allegiance on a regular basis in our school I don’t know where they’re getting those facts.”

Parents at Radney Elementary are under the impression that their children are reciting the pledge every morning.

“I think it’s something that should be said because it’s something we’ve always done and if a kid chooses not to say it they shouldn’t have to,” said Rhonda Williamson.

As of Tuesday, the school system had not received any complaints from parents.
