Tuskegee wins pair in SIAC West Cluster

FRANKFORT, Ky. (goldentigersports.com) —  Jessica Johnson posted a career-high Friday morning offensively to lead Tuskegee University to their first two victories of the season, opening conference play with a 3-0 (25-14,25-20,25-20) victory over Central State University at the West Cluster.

Tuskegee (1-5, 1-0 SAIC) got a career-high 12 kills from Johnson on 28 total attempts, as they freshman finished the first match of the two-day Cluster hitting .250. Donovan Wingfield and Taliyana Bryant also added seven kills each to pace the Tuskegee attack that finished the day with 38 kills and hitting .204.

Janae Graham assisted on 31 of the 38 kills for Tuskegee in the morning match, while the team had assists on 36 of the team’s assist. Zahria Radford led the Lady Golden Tigers with seven digs.

In the second match of the day, Tuskegee claimed a 3-0 (25-12,26-24,25-13) victory over Lane later in the morning session.

Johnson finished with 11 kills and Wilson 10 to lead Tuskegee to their second consecutive victory with a sweep of Lane. Wingfield finished with six kills and Bryant seven in the win. Meanwhile, Graham finished with 29 assists and Radford finished with nine digs and five assists in the second victory of the day.

The Lady Golden Tigers finished with 40 kills and hit .256 in the three-set win, while holding Lane to just 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .027.

Tuskegee (2-6, 2-1 SIAC) fell in their final match of the day in a match-up of teams predicted to finish at or near the top of the SIAC West Division, falling in four sets to Kentucky State 3-1 (10-25,19-25,25-23,18-25).

Bryant led the Lady Golden Tigers with nine kills in the match, finishing the opening day with 23 on the day. Johnson ended with seven kills in the finale, giving her a total of 29 kills on the opening day; while Jacqueline Wilson added five kills.

Graham finished the match with 27 assists on the team’s 32 kills, finishing the day with 87 assists in three matches – averaging 29 assists per match. Radford finished with 13 digs, the most of any match on the day, and finished the opening day of the Cluster with 29 digs.

Tuskegee finished the Cluster by playing LeMoyne-Owen tomorrow in their only match of the day, beginning at 8 am (est).
