Troy volleyball falls to Eastern Illinois and FIU in Maroon Classic
STARKVILLE, Miss. (troytrojans.com) – The Troy volleyball team fell to Eastern Illinois and FIU in three sets each on Saturday, the final day of the Maroon Classic, at Newell-Grissom Building in Starkville, Miss.
Troy (6-9) fell down early in the first set to Eastern Illinois (3-10) as the Panthers went on to win 25-22. In the second set, both teams bounced back and forth and it was tied at 21. Eastern Illinois scored the next three points and went up 24-21 en route to a 25-23 win. The Trojans fell in the final set 26-24.
The nightcap saw the Trojans battle, but fall behind late in the first set to FIU (6-7) and lost 25-23. Troy was up 21-18 in the second set, but the Panthers went on a 7-0 run that led to a 25-23 victory. The Trojans had a .061 hitting percentage in the third set and FIU capped off the set with a 5-0 run for a 25-20 clincher.
STAT OF THE GAME (EASTERN ILLINOIS)
The Trojans had 45 kills to the Panthers 35, but the Trojans committed 28 attack errors for a .137 hitting percentage for the match.
TURNING POINT (EASTERN ILLINOIS)
Troy had a 22-18 lead in the fifth set, but Eastern Illinois finished off the fifth set on a run that clinched the match for the Panthers. The Trojans committed 12 errors in the third set.
STAT OF THE GAME (FIU)
The third set saw eight lead changes and 14 total ties.
TURNING POINT (FIU)
FIU clinched the match in the third set with the set tied at 20 and the Panthers scoring five straight to win 25-20 and seal the match.
- Jordyn Saulsberry had 12 kills in the match; only four away form her career-high.
- Logan Page had five total blocks in the set, which tied a career-high for the redshirt freshman.
Troy will return to the friendly confines of Trojan Arena for a Friday night matchup against Texas State. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
