Millbrook Middle School Student Charged after Clown Threat

creepy clown1On Monday evening, September 19, Millbrook police officials and officials from the Elmore County Board of Education were made aware of a posts on Instagram, which depicted a picture of a menacing clown and a caption that stated; “ I will be at Stanhope Wednesday, so be ready.” On Tuesday night a second series of post appeared on Instagram.

These posts also depicted two images, both menacing clown figures. The initial post stated; Places I’m visiting and when, Millbrook Middle School Wednesday and Lowndes Academy on Friday. In the comment section of the posts the clown made specific threats towards students at Millbrook Middle School.

Investigators from the Millbrook Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit and the Millbrook School Resource Officer have been working this case since Monday evening. At approximately 1:00 PM Investigators took a student from Millbrook Middle School into custody.

During an interview the juvenile admitted to making the threatening posts here in Millbrook and Lowndes County. The juvenile was charged with Making Terroristic Threats. Upon completion of processing the juvenile was turned over to her grandfather. This case will be forwarded to Elmore County Juvenile Court.

Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson released the falling statement:

“This appears to be a nationwide trend that has found its way to the River Region, specifically here in Millbrook. I can’t tell you how many times my phone has rung over the past three days. Our staff, particularly our School Resource Officer and our Criminal Investigation Unit, has definitely put in a lot of work in a short period of time and I want to commend them for bringing this case to a swift resolution. They did an outstanding job. I appreciate the assistance of the Offices of the Alabama Attorney General and the Elmore County District Attorney, who assisted in this case. I also appreciate Dr. Andre Harrison and his staff at the Elmore County Board of Education, for their cooperation during our investigation. They took every precaution with the safety of our children in mind. Dr. Harrison and I have been in constant communication throughout this ordeal.

While we are pleased to announce the arrest and resolution to this case, I want to reiterate that even though our investigation has revealed that this appears to be nothing more than a prank perpetrated by a juvenile, it is anything but harmless. We have many children and parents that were disturbed greatly. School activities were disrupted, law enforcement personnel and Board of Education Personnel had to cease what they were doing, which left law enforcement and school administrative task lacking as efforts had to be focused on the safety and welfare of our students.

In closing, I will reiterate what I said earlier this week. Our children are our most precious resource. Anything done to place those in harm’s way, anything that disrupts the normal daily operations of our schools, or causes emergency personnel to redirect their efforts as this incident has, constitutes a Terrorist Threat, which is a Class A Felony. We simply will not tolerate this type of activity in our City, particularly when it involves ours schools. Anyone who engages in this type activity will be identified, apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This is certainly not a laughing matter!”
