Tuskegee’s 13 game road win streak ends at MVSU

ITTA BENA, Miss. (goldentigersports.com) —  The Tuskegee University volleyball team ended their 13-match road streak Tuesday night, falling to Division I-member Mississippi Valley State 3-1 (23-25,25-21,23-25,20-25) at the HPER Complex.

Tuskegee (5-12, 5-5 SIAC), who has not been at home since the opening season of the weekend, battled back after dropping the first set to take the second.  After trading the first eight points of the second set, Tuskegee went on a 9-3 to take their biggest lead of the set at 13-7. After Mississippi Valley State closed the gap to three, Tuskegee a pair of kills by Shaykia Wilson and four errors by the home team to extend the lead back to six at 20-14.

From that point, Tuskegee was able to hold off Mississippi Valley State to win the second set.

The Lady Golden Tigers kept the momentum going into the third set, leading 8-6 until Mississippi Valley State went on a 10-4 run to take their biggest lead of the set at 18-12. Tuskegee battled back behind a trio of kills by Jessica Johnson and a kill by Donovan Wingfield to take a 22-21 lead. Mississippi Valley State was able to win the set on a pair of attack errors by the Lady Golden Tigers.

The two teams traded points for much of the fourth set, until Mississippi Valley State went on a 4-0 run to pull ahead 21-15 before holding on for the win.

Wilson and Johnson led Tuskegee with 11 kills each in the win, with Wilson hitting .318 in four sets for the Lady Golden Tigers. The duo combined for 22 of the team’s 38 kills, while Taliyana Bryant added seven in the loss.

Janae Graham, the reigning SIAC Setter of the Week, finished the match with 29 assists and seven digs, while Zahria Radford finished with 26 digs.

Tuskegee returns to action next week hosting the West Cluster, beginning October 6 at Chappie James Arena.
