Troy women’s basketball ranked in preseason poll
TROY, Ala. (troytrojans.com) – The Troy women’s basketball team, reigning Sun Belt Conference champions, was selected to win the league by the coaches last week. Now, the Trojans have been recognized as one of the top mid-major programs in the nation as CollegeInsider.com ranked Troy No. 17 in its Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 poll on Wednesday.
“I couldn’t be more proud of what our players, our staff and administration have done,” Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. “To see us rise to a national preseason ranking means we are being recognized as a predominate women’s basketball program.
“One of our goals was to have people think women’s basketball when they hear Troy, this proves that we are making strides in that direction.”
The Trojans finished last season with a 20-13 record and claimed the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title earning the program’s second-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. Troy averaged 80.2 points per game – seventh-most in the NCAA – and has led the league in scoring in each of the last four seasons.
The team kicks off its 2016-17 regular season at Auburn on Nov. 11 and plays its home opener on Nov. 16 against Belmont.
