UWA Offer Education Majors Scholarships and Other Aid
The University of West Alabama is planning to launch a program that would give education majors scholarships and other assistance if they commit to teach in a Black Belt community for at least three years.
The first round of scholarships for the Black Belt Teaching Corps will be awarded in the upcoming spring semester.
Dean Jan Miller says the Julia S. Tutwiler College of Education will award 10 scholarships a year to education majors.
Each chosen student will receive a partial scholarship of $2,500 per semester. Officials hope the students’ experiences in the region will prompt them to continue working there after graduation.
The Black Belt is comprised of rural counties in west and central Alabama known for its dark soil.
