Troy falls to Coastal Carolina on Senior Night
TROY, Ala. (troytrojans.com) – The Troy volleyball team fell to Sun Belt East Division leader, Coastal Carolina, in three sets (15-25, 13-25, 15-25) as the senior class was honored on Saturday night at Trojan Arena.
Troy (8-21, 2-10 Sun Belt) fell behind early, 12-4, and could only cut the deficit to five points. The Trojans would eventually fall 25-15 in the first set.
Coastal Carolina (19-4, 10-1 Sun Belt) hit .375 in the second set and won the set 25-13. The Trojans never took the lead, but tied the Chanticleers twice early in the third set. From that point, Troy fell victim to a 10-2 run that eventually led to a 25-15 Coastal Carolina third set win.
“We saw where we are trying to get to tonight,” Sonny Kirkpatrick said. “We knew that they were really, really good coming in with everyone that they had played and beaten in the preseason and what they have done in the conference. We didn’t play badly, they just played better than we did.”
The Trojans burned their first timeout early in the first set after falling behind 6-1, led with four kills by the Chanticleers. Troy called its final timeout of the set nine points later after two service aces put Coastal Carolina up 12-4.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Sara Landis picked up five kills in the match, but only needed three to achieve a milestone. Landis reached 500 career kills as a Trojan with her third kill of the match.
• The seniors combined for 16 kills and four total blocks. Symone Shaw picked up nine kills and had four blocks in the match, while Landis picked up five kills. Causey rounded out the senior class with two kills and two blocks.
• Reina Terry picked up 17 assists in the match. She had a .354 assist percentage on the night.
Troy will hit the road to travel to Louisiana for a Friday night match against ULM at 6:30 p.m., and a Sunday afternoon matchup with ULM at noon.
