Corrections Officer Stabbed During Cell Search

shawn baker mugAlabama Department of Corrections officials report a stabbing of a corrections officer today at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer.

The stabbing happened at approximately 12:00 a.m. Wednesday while the officer was conducting a search of the inmate’s cell.  Prison officials report the officer found contraband inside the cell and when questioned, the inmate assaulted the officer with a makeshift knife he was concealing.

The officer received a head wound and defensive wounds to his hands.  The officer was treated at a local hospital and his injuries are reported as non-life-threatening.

Inmate Shawn Baker, 32, will be charged for attacking the officer.  Baker is serving life-without-parole for a 2007 attempted murder conviction out of Madison County.

No other officers or inmates were involved in the assault.   The facility was not placed on lockdown following the isolated incident.

ADOC is not releasing the officer’s name to protect his privacy.
