Lady Hornets SWAC soccer tourney preps

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (bamastatesports.com)– The Alabama State women’s soccer team will begin their quest for a championship run in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament beginning today at 3 p.m. at Prairie View A&M’s new soccer facility.

Alabama State (8-9-1 overall, 7-2-1 SWAC) is the third seed and will take on sixth-seeded Jackson State (4-11-1 overall, 4-5-1 SWAC).

Statistically, the Lady Hornets were the most potent offense as it led the nation among Division I women’s soccer programs in goals scored (57), goals per match (3.17) and points per match (8.50).

The teams played to a 0-0 tie in Jackson, Miss. on Oct. 16.

Lady Hornets’ goalkeeper Gianna Guyot made seven saves in that match while Lady Tigers counterpart Kylie Christian made three saves during the last match up.

Jackson State has won the SWAC Championship twice (2013 and 2010) in school history since the SWAC Tournament begin in 2003.

ASU has reached the championship in two of the previous three seasons (2015 and 2013), but has yet to win the championship and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
