Lady Hornets down Faulkner 82-54 in friendly exhibition
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – The Alabama State women’s basketball team carried a nine-point lead into halftime and then turned it on with a huge second half behind an effective press defense as the Lady Hornets debuted their 2016-17 season with an 82-54 exhibition victory over Faulkner at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Monday evening.
Senior Britney Wright led ASU with a game-high 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and grabbed 13 rebounds as Alabama State outscored Faulkner a combined total of 40-21 in the third and fourth quarters.
Daniele Ewert provided an all-around game with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks while Danielle Clark added 14 points.
“We turned up our press in the second half because we were a little stagnant in the first half offensively,” said ASU head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.
“We wanted to get some easier baskets like lay ups as opposed to just coming down the floor and setting up the offense. I thought Ewert was instrumental in helping us get some of those easy baskets. She’s a smart player. She was able to read the defense well and get a couple of steals as well. Then, Britney [Wright] was able to knock down a 3-pointer and get a couple of lay ups. That was the difference in the game.”
ASU opens the season at North Carolina on Friday at 4 p.m.
