Hundreds Attend MACOA International Tasting Fundraiser
The Montgomery Area Council on Aging (MACOA) held the 12th annual International Tasting fundraiser Sunday. Dozens of countries were on display, from food to traditional dances. Hundreds of people came out to sample international cuisine and donate to MACOA, an organization that helps feed Montgomery seniors.
For event organizer Sieu Tang Wood, it’s also a chance to share her culture’s values on the elderly.
“My thinking is always, we love our parent. But we have to love other peoples’ parent,” she said. “To take care, our senior citizen. Because they take care us when we was young. So now’s the time to give it back to them.” Tang Wood is Chinese and explains that in her country elders are well-respected and taken care of.
She came up with the International Tasting to bring those ideas – that elders need to be taken care of – to Montgomery.
“I just want everybody, don’t miss their chance. Take care your parent. Take care the elderly. And if your parent already gone, take other people, adopt your parent. Go out and take care of them. Hold their hand, listen their story. And share their life. And that the meaning for this event,” she said.
