Lady Hornets tumble to Southern Miss 70-43
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (bamastatesports.com) – The Alabama State women’s basketball team played close with Southern Mississippi through the first half before a tough third quarter left them with a 70-43 defeat on Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum.
The Lady Hornets (0-4) led 15-13 about midway through the second quarter after Daniele Ewert knocked down a 3-pointer off an assist from Shamyiah Smith.
But ASU did not finish the quarter well as it was outscored 11-3 for the remainder of the quarter and went into the break trailing 24-18.
The Golden Eagles (3-0) opened it up in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Hornets 26-10 to cruise the remainder of the way.
ASU was befuddled by 26 turnovers and 27 percent shooting from the floor as a team.
Brittany Dinkins led Southern Miss with a game-high 19 points and seven steals.
Britney Wright, fresh off her SWAC Player of the Week honor, led the Lad Hornets with 13 points and six rebounds.
Next, Alabama State will hold their season home opener against Mobile on Friday at 8 p.m. from the Acadome.
