Effort Underway to Set Up Homeless Shelter in Selma
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
The Alabama Rural Coalition for the Homeless is conducting a count of the homeless people in the Selma area.
“In the point in time count it basically gives us a great number of the individuals that are homeless in the community so that we can receive the appropriate funding from HUD,” said ARCH volunteer Angela Manora.
Manora says the count is another step in the effort to bring a homeless shelter to the area.
She says the information collected during the count will provide a reliable snapshot of homelessness in the community.
Manora said the data will also be used to determine the area’s need for a shelter.
Callie Green with the Center for Non Violence, Truth and Reconciliation says the need is definitely there.
“We know there’s a need because we see the people everyday. We live here, we know there’s a need.”
The next homeless shelter meeting is Tuesday, February 21st at 5:30 pm at the Selma Center for Non-Violence.
