Carver High Coach Identified as Victim in Fatal Crash with 18-Wheeler

On Tuesday, Jan. 31, at about 8:30 p.m., Montgomery Police and Fire Medics responded to Interstate 85 north at the Mitylene exit in reference to a three-vehicle collision. The crash resulted in one fatality.

The crash involved a 2007 Freightliner Classic, a 2015 International Tractor and a 2003 Jeep Cherokee.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, Gregory Quarles, 48, of Montgomery was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the 18-wheelers were not injured.

MPD’s initial investigation indicates there was a collision involving all three vehicles. As a result of the collision the Freightliner and the Jeep Cherokee became engulfed in flames. Due to the intensity of the fire, the involvement of the Jeep Cherokee was not known until the fire was contained.

Montgomery Public School confirm that Quarles was a defensive line coach at Carver High School in Montgomery.

MPD accident investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash, and no further information is available for release at this time.
