One Year Later, Still No Answers for BTW

As we approach the one year anniversary of Booker T. Washington Magnet High School burning to the ground, there are still no clear answers for the future of the school.

The school moved to the vacant Hayneville Road Elementary School building, but most acknowledge that is not a permanent solution.  School Board President Clare Weil says they recently formed a committee to look at school needs and maintenance issues across the district, including at BTW.  She says this all comes down to a problem all too familiar to District Leaders, a lack of funding.

“We have just gone through a reduction in force, we had to lay off teachers, right now we’re trying to steady our boat so we can get it turned around,” Weil explained.

Weil says much of the insurance money from the fire went to the quick move into Hayneville Road.  She also says an ad valorem tax increase would help solve some of the funding issues the school system faces.
