Two-Thirds of Mid-South Football, including Faulkner, postpones to the Spring

After months of conversations about a path forward, Faulkner University received some clarity regarding its football season Tuesday.

The Mid-South Conference announced its football decisions for the 2020-21 season Tuesday afternoon, noting the Florida-centric Sun Division intends to play in the fall. The Appalachian and Bluegrass divisions will each move all competitions to the spring semester, coinciding with the NAIA decision from two weeks ago that moved the fall sports championship programs.

The move means Faulkner will see all of its athletic programs set to hold its conference competitions in the spring semester. The men’s and women’s soccer programs are set to have some non-conference games in the fall while volleyball and football will move entirely to the spring.
Presently, the men’s and women’s basketball programs are set to tip off in October with non-conference competition. The teams will begin conference play in January.

Faulkner will have further announcements regarding official schedules once they are handed down from conference leaders in the Southern States Athletic Conference and the Mid-South Conference in the coming days.

Official Mid-South Conference Statement:

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Two Mid-South Conference football divisions have postponed their fall divisional schedule while a third intends to play this fall, MSC Commissioner Eric Ward announced on Tuesday.

The Appalachian and Bluegrass Division’s administrative councils recommended — with a subsequent vote by those institutions’ presidents — to postpone the fall divisional schedule due to the ongoing concerns from COVID-19. The Sun Division leadership announced their intention to play its original divisional slate beginning on September 12.

Each of the three divisions independently determined divisional play during the fall. With the football footprint spanning over seven states, each division’s administrative council was given the authority to make the decision on fall play based on state and federal regulations within its geographical area.

While the schedule is adjusted in the Appalachian and Bluegrass, institutions within those divisions retain the autonomy to play non-conference games or scrimmages this fall.

NAIA officials announced on July 31 that the NAIA Football Championship Series would be moved to spring 2021. The NAIA expects to announce the FCS dates later this month. The Mid-South Conference schedule for the Appalachian and Bluegrass will be announced following the NAIA’s release of the FCS dates.
