The Berlin Marathon says the race cannot be held as planned in September because of new restrictions in the city related to the coronavirus pandemic.

City authorities have extended a ban on major events with more than 5,000 people until October 24. More than 62,000 people took part in the marathon last year.

Organizers say they will take time to “engage with the consequences of the authorities blocking our events, agree on further steps and then inform you.”

Minor leagues prepared to accept contraction plan

NEW YORK (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the minor leagues are prepared to agree to Major League Baseball’s proposal to cut guaranteed affiliations from 160 to 120 next year.

The plan would impact hundreds of prospects and cut player development expenses. An electronic negotiating session is scheduled for Wednesday.

The government in the Netherlands has extended a ban on large events, including professional sports, until Sept. 1 — effectively ending the country’s soccer season.

The Dutch soccer federation responded by saying it intends to cancel the rest of the 2019-20 season and will consult with European governing body UEFA.

UEFA has previously said nations risk losing their Champions League and Europa League entries for next season if organizers end domestic seasons too soon without trying to complete games.
