Tom Brady signs with Buccaneers

UNDATED (AP) — Six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady has signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, saying he is embarking on a “new football journey.”

The 42-year-old quarterback who spent the first 20 years of his career with the New England Patriots announced his decision Friday in an Instagram post and thanked the Bucs for the opportunity.

The deal is worth $30 million per season.

The signing comes three days after Brady announced on social media that he would not return to New England, ending his historic run with the Patriots.

BOSTON (AP) — San Francisco Giants right-hander Tyler Beede will undergo Tommy John elbow surgery. Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi made the announcement and Beede’s surgery will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister in the Dallas area. Beede joined others who are having procedures, some because there is ample time given baseball’s season being pushed back because of the novel coronavirus. Northern Colorado promotes Smiley as head basketball coach

GREELEY, Colorado (AP) — Steve Smiley has been promoted to head men’s basketball coach at Northern Colorado, replacing Jeff Lindor, who took over at the University of Wyoming.

Athletic director Darren Dunn announced the promotion Thursday night about 48 hours after naming Smiley the interim head coach following Lindor’s departure.

The school plans a virtual press conference on Friday to introduce the 20th head coach in the program’s history.

Lindor went 80-50 in four seasons at Northern Colorado, including three consecutive 20-plus win seasons. Smily joined Lindor’s staff in May of 2016.

The Pro Motocross Championship has canceled the season-opening Hangtown Classic due to concerns over the coronavirus.

The race outside of Sacramento, California, had been slated for May 16.

MX Sports Pro Racing, which operates the motocross series, is monitoring ongoing developments and discussing how to handle the rest of the schedule. The next scheduled race is May 23 at Pala, California.

The Hangtown Classic is the longest-running motocross national, dating to 1968.
