North Carolina Native Cam Ingram Races In Pikes Peak International Hill Climb For The 1st TimeBy Samantha Gilstrap, News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado is right around the corner and one North Carolina native is racing in it for the very first time.
Bahakel Sports, a division of our parent company, will stream the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb live on Alabamanews.net on June 27.
Sports reporter Hannah Oliveto of Bahakel station WCCB in Charlotte spoke to that driver.
“We lost some things, but more importantly some people and it was a wake up call.”
To understand why Cam Ingram is competing in his first Pikes Peak Hill Climb we have to go back to 2019.
A gas explosion impacted the Porsche business that he owns with his father in downtown Durham. And after he realized it was time to live life to the fullest.
“A light went off in my head that said it’s time to do this now while I’m still relatively young and still have good reflexes.”
Ingram went to a racing school to train and he has an experienced Pikes Peak driver as a mentor.
But no matter how much you practice the race up the mountains is still treacherous and dangerous.
“It’s really a technical race. It’s 156 turns, it’s 12.5 miles, and you’re racing on a leaving breathing organism, it’s a mountain.”
If you make it to the top that’s an accomplishment in and of itself.
There’s also a special treat waiting for the drivers, and that’s what’s motivating Ingram.
“Well that’s been the crazy thing all my friends and colleagues, people are like oh my gosh you’re going to podium. I don’t think people understand as a rookie it’s a challenge just to finish the race. Getting the top and eating that famous donut at the top of Pikes Peak 14,000 feet up so that’s my goal.”
Ingram is an example that it’s never too late to try something new.
“I hope this is a story that inspires other people that maybe their in a situation where their a little older like I am and are like well maybe I can’t do that, go run a marathon, or something but I hope it does that for someone else.”
