Top two teams meet in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Top-ranked Gonzaga will face number-two UCLA in the Good Sam Empire Classic tonight in Las Vegas, a rematch of the thrilling national semifinal won by the Bulldogs in overtime.

This will be the first time the Bruins have faced the nation’s top-ranked team in the regular season since Dec. 3, 2016, when they defeated top-ranked Kentucky in Rupp Arena.

And that’s not the only tournament action in Las Vegas. One of the premier early-season tournaments, the Maui Invitational, is being played on the mainland again because of COVID-19 with number-12 Houston joining Oregon, Wisconsin and Butler. Houston meets Wisconsin today. The games are being played at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas after they were played in Asheville, North Carolina, last season.

In Kansas City, number-13 Arkansas meets Cincinnati in the championship game of the Hall of Fame Classic. Fourteenth-ranked Illinois plays Kansas State for third place.

NBA

Lakers, without LeBron, visit Knicks

NEW YORK (AP) — When the New York Knicks host the Los Angeles Lakers tonight, LeBron James won’t be on the court for the Lakers. He was suspended for one game after his altercation with Isaiah Stewart of the Pistons on Sunday. Stewart got a two-game ban. The Lakers are at .500 following their win over the Pistons. The Knicks are coming off of a loss to the Chicago Bulls.

Elsewhere in the NBA:

— Isaiah Stewart will be missing the first of two games when the Pistons host the Miami Heat.

— The Portland Trail Blazers — with a home-court record of 8-and-1 so far this season — look for their fourth straight win when they host the Denver Nuggets, who’ve lost four in a row.

— The Los Angeles Clippers — who beat the Mavericks 97-91 on Sunday — will look for a repeat when they again host Dallas.

NHL

Blackhawks visit Calgary

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — In NHL action, the Chicago Blackhawks — who’ve won five of their last six games after a sluggish start this season — are in Calgary to play the Flames.

The other two games on the NHL schedule find Philadelphia playing at Tampa Bay, and the Dallas Stars hosting the Edmonton Oilers.
